39D Joins MANRS: Strengthening Internet Routing Security

We're pleased to announce that 39D is now an official participant in the Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS) initiative for our ISP network and ASN routing operations.

While most people never think about internet routing, it's one of the most important parts of the global internet. Every website you visit, every cloud service you connect to and every VoIP call relies on thousands of independent networks exchanging routing information accurately and securely.

Joining MANRS reflects our ongoing commitment to operating our network responsibly and helping make the wider internet more resilient.

What is MANRS?

MANRS is a global initiative that brings together internet service providers, network operators and infrastructure organisations to improve routing security through a common set of best practices.

Its aim is simple. It aims to reduce routing incidents such as route leaks, IP address hijacking and accidental misconfigurations that can impact the reliability and security of internet services worldwide.

These issues might sound technical, but they can affect organisations of every size by disrupting connectivity, slowing services or redirecting internet traffic unexpectedly.

Why it Matters

The internet works because thousands of independently operated networks trust one another to exchange routing information correctly.

If incorrect routing information is advertised, whether through human error or malicious activity, traffic can be misdirected, interrupted or exposed to unnecessary risk.

MANRS encourages network operators to implement recognised routing security measures, including:

  • Filtering route announcements to prevent invalid prefixes from being advertised.
  • Maintaining accurate routing and network contact information.
  • Using Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) to validate route origins.
  • Supporting coordination and communication between network operators.
  • Reducing the risk of route leaks and accidental configuration errors.

Collectively, these practices help improve the stability and security of the global internet.

A Shared Responsibility

The importance of routing security has been highlighted by the publication of Addressing the Internet Routing Supply Chain Risk, which explains how weaknesses in one part of the internet routing ecosystem can have consequences far beyond a single organisation.

Routing security is not something one provider can solve alone. It relies on networks around the world following recognised best practices and working together to improve the resilience of the internet as a whole.

What This Means at 39D

Our network, AS34979, provides connectivity, routing and infrastructure services that support our customers, partners and hosted platforms.

MANRS participation demonstrates that the controls we have invested in align with recognised industry standards, including:

  • Route filtering
  • RPKI route origin validation
  • Secure peering practices
  • Continuous network monitoring
  • Documented operational procedures
  • Resilient routing architecture

These measures form part of our wider approach to delivering secure, reliable and resilient network services.

A Word from Our Founder

"Internet routing is largely invisible when it works properly, but it underpins almost every business service we rely on. MANRS participation demonstrates that we take our responsibility as a network operator seriously and that we are committed to improving the security and resilience of the wider internet."

Matthew Southgate
Founder, 39D

Looking Ahead

Our participation in MANRS supports the work we carry out for organisations that depend on reliable connectivity, including managed IT, hosted infrastructure, VoIP platforms, business internet services and more complex networking environments.

As the internet continues to evolve, we're committed to investing in secure, resilient infrastructure that helps protect both our customers and the wider internet community.

If you'd like to discuss resilient connectivity, BGP routing, secure network design, managed firewalls or business IT security, we'd be happy to help.
